optionalEverything bagel seasoning mix (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions
Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Mix with a spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Form into a ball and place in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Bagels: Once risen, punch the dough down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. Poke a hole in the center with your finger and gently stretch it to form a ring.
Second Rise: Place the shaped bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover them with the damp cloth, and let them rest for another 30 minutes.
Boil the Bagels: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large pot, bring water to a rolling boil and add honey. Carefully drop the bagels into the boiling water (2-3 at a time) and boil for 1 minute on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and place them back on the baking sheet.
Add Toppings: In a small bowl, mix the garlic powder, onion powder, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and coarse sea salt. While the bagels are still wet from boiling, sprinkle this mixture generously over the tops of each bagel.
Bake the Bagels: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the bagels are golden brown and puffed up.
Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Enjoy fresh or toasted with your favorite spreads!
